The Cornwall Intermediate Celtics lacrosse team came home as Provincial Silver Medalists, saving their best for last. The Cornwall Celtics (ages 17-21) didn't win any local tournaments in 2010, but they came through big-time in Whitby finishing second at the Ontario Lacrosse Association 16-team C-level championships. It's Cornwall's first-ever silver Provincial medal at the intermediate level, a first medal for head coach George McFarlane. "The difference this year was the (level of) commitment,' McFarlane said."The guys worked very, very hard this year. They knew we had a good team and they were committed to practicing and winning.' Cornwall was an overall 4-2 at the provincials, posting wins over Stayner (4-3), Sun County (8-1) and Wallaceburg (6-1) before moving on to the semifinal round. The Celtics capped the mid-week three-day affair with a 3-2 semifinal win over the Gloucester Griffins before dropping the final 5-3 to Nepean's Knights. It was a close gold-medal game, the Celtics trailed 4-3 and pulled their net minder, but Nepean scored a late insurance goal. Overall, this was an outstanding way to finish the season by coming home with a SILVER medal from the Provincials in Whitby. Congratulations Celtics, you deserve it.
